When an auto accident occurs, one of the first things you reach for is your auto insurance cards. Preparing yourself before hand can make the auto insurance claims process much faster during that critical and stressful time.
Here are a few tips to speed up your repair time and get you back out on the road.
- Call your insurance agent or your insurance companies claims center as soon as possible, regardless of who is at fault. If you are not injured and can call from the scene, do so.
- Ask your agent or company representative what documents they need from you and how to proceed with getting your car repaired. Your insurance company will require a "proof of claim" form and, a copy of the police report when the responding officer generated one.
- Send in the requested information. Many companies will now accept faxed copies in lieu of the originals. This speeds up the claims process, allowing you to get repairs done sooner. Keep good records and be sure to get names and phone numbers of everyone you speak with and copies of any bills related to the accident.
- Remember, each state has its own laws governing the claims process. If you have any questions, call your agent, company representative or your state insurance department.
It pays to know your policy beforehand. Take the time to read your auto insurance policy carefully. If you don't understand your policy, call your agent and/or state insurance department to get your questions answered.
